ENDANGERED ANIMALS

For many millions of years, Australia has been separated by sea from all the other land masses of the world.

And so our wildlife has evolved in isolation, adapting to meet only the demands made by the climate.

Since the coming of the European settlers in 1788 however, much has changed. For the settlers

brought with them rabbits, cats, pigs, foxes and other creatures which soon escaped into the bush

and became feral. Only humans, with their need for land and its subsequent destruction of

habitats, represent a greater danger to these creatures.

Your task:

The CSIRO is providing extra funding in the 2007 budget to help protect Australia’s en-

dangered animal species for future generations.  Your mission is to prepare a report

for the government outlining ways in which an endangered animals could be saved from

extinction.  In order to do this, you must first select 3 endangered Australian animals and locate information on each of these animals.  You will then need to decide which animal should be saved and why.

  • You must include :
  • a definition of the term ‘endangered’ ;
  • describe the habitat in which the animal lives ;
  • its physical description, including the numbers left in the wild ;
  • the animal’s behaviour ;
  • the food chain in which the animal is part ;
  • the reasons why the animal is endangered;
  • and finally your solutions to the problem.

You must collect all your information and record it on the note-taking sheet provided. Download this sheet and save it to your Home drive. You must complete a note-taking sheet for each animal.

You must present your report as a Power Point Presentation that will include text, illustrations and sounds.
