Nudgee Junior Home St. Joseph's College, Nudgee Junior

‘To be literate in the 21st century one must have the flexible and sustainable mastery of a repertoire of practices with the texts of traditional and new communication technologies via spoken language, print and multi-media, and the ability to use these practices in various social contexts.’

-adapted from Literate Futures: Report,p9.

At Nudgee Junior College we design units of work that enhance the literacy skills of students by developing knowledge about language and how it works. We aim to assist students to use, think about and analyse language and to develop strategies for composing, comprehending and responding to texts. Your son will be required to participate in a broad range of activities across all Key Learning Areas in which he will be required to compose and comprehend texts across a range of media, including websites, film, radio and traditional texts and to present his work in a range of modes including public speaking, PowerPoint displays, written reports, dramatisations as well as traditional methods of delivery.

At Nudgee Junior College we encourage our pupils to read for pleasure. We also structure reading through our Co-operative Reading program based on Glenda Raison’s work and the Four Resources model of Professors Alan Luke and Peter Freebody. Our school library resource centre iis well resourced and well used by our students.

Grammar and Spelling are taught explicitly. We are currently using the Strategic Spelling programme throughout the school. We aim to have a shared practice and repertoire of skills taught which enable our pupils to revisit and enhance their understanding as they progress through the school.
