Welcome to the LEARNING ENRICHMENT CENTRE with Julie
Conybeare and Gail Northcote. Our
aim is to assist any boys who need support in accessing the curriculum. They may be withdrawn, supported in
class or have classroom work adapted.
The boys enjoy the
opportunity of working in smaller, quieter groups; we enjoy their enthusiasm and
energy. Boys are withdrawn based on
needs ascertained by standardised testing, class tests and the way they function
within the classroom. We recognise
that all students have specific learning styles with strengths and
weaknesses. For this reason we
continually resource strategies to cater to a variety of learning styles.
We discovered that Nintendo has maths
activities which the boys enjoy as an alternative to learning maths facts and
skills. We currently use Big Brain
Academy and will be introducing Brain
Training and More Brain Training.
These games were formulated to assist older people keep their brains active;
there is no doubt they are useful to get them active too!
Our behaviour
management policy is very simple, with only one rule: “Treat others the way you
would like to be treated.” This is
in line with the behaviour policy followed by class teachers and specialists
across the school.
The centre gets off to an early start with
the CD assisted Rainbow Reading Program’s first session starting at 7:30am. This program is suited to students whose
reading accuracy is below average.
Boys listen to CDs on walkmans and then work through a variety of
worksheets to provide repetition and embed words into memory to allow more
automatic recall. Help is always
appreciated if parents have any spare time.

Each class has 5 lessons a week where boys
can be withdrawn. We work closely
with class teachers to ensure the same work is being covered and adapted where
necessary. Three lessons a week per year level are allocated to maths. Boys are withdrawn for two language
lessons a week in order to build basic skills working towards genre writing used
in each year level.
Quiet Club is
offered three times a week for students who prefer quieter playtimes. The boys are invited to join a small
group of boys in the Learning Enrichment Centre after they have had their lunch
on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
We have a variety of quiet activities which they can enjoy on their own
or in the group. This is supervised
by one of the learning support teachers or the counsellor.
Please keep in
touch via diaries or email – we welcome the opportunity to work with families to
help students achieve their potential.
If you would like to discuss your son’s learning profile, strategies to
best assist him or referrals to relevant specialists, we would love to hear from
you.
Yours in
support
