Term 1 so far……
Maths: Ø Students have been working through a unit on the Typical NJC Student which has involved students collecting data about student appearances and height and representing this data through tables and graphs. Students have also been dealing with the following concepts: - Mean, Median, Mode. - Whole numbers involving millions. - Using length, mass, volume and capacity. - Working with tenths, hundredths and thousandths. - Using mental computation strategies for addition and subtraction. - Basic facts tested weekly.
English: Ø Students have been working through a unit on developing their literacy skills for participating in our classroom convention on Federation and classroom debating. Students have also been developing their skills in the following areas: - Text construction (exposition and recount). - Comprehension (Co-operative reading and rotation activities) - Public/Persuasive speaking and debating - Spelling (Soundwaves and weekly testing)
Religion: Ø Students have been exploring the way interrelationships between people, nature, cultures and religion nurture spirituality and contribute to personal identity. Students have thought about what spirituality means to them and how the people in their lives may have contributed to their understanding.
Science: Ø Students have been investigating what makes a fair test. They have had opportunities to identify whether or not a test is fair. Students designed a test involving growing tomatos and have had to identify and control the variables. The seeds are starting to sprout and the students now have to record their observations.
SOSE: Ø Students have been learning about Australia as a federation and the development of the States/Territories. The reasons for and against federation have been discussed and some of the key events leading up to federation were investigated. Students have been preparing for a “classroom convention” where they represent a colony and are required to deliver 2 short speeches offering an opinion on 2 identified issues. Students have also been conducting research in order to construct a powerpoint or photostory presentation on an Australian Prime Minister of their choice.

Year 7 Camp Edmund Park, Laidley Ø 17/03/2008 Ø Program and clothing list will be sent home in the week before camp. Ø Bus departs NJC at 8:30am and returns Thursday 20/03/2008 at approx 2:30pm.

Weekly Homework Includes: Ø Soundwaves – 2 pages Ø Go Figure – 2 pages Ø Reading – Nightly for approx 15-20 minutes Ø Spelling – Written out 3 times in homework book. To be revised nightly using a strategy such as Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check. Ø Tables – Students are to choose a set of tables to revise for the week and write them out at least once in their homework book. Ø Drama/Music/ Ø Japanese– Weekly homework is set by Miss McGeever and Mr Ramsey. Ø Classroom Activities – Class activities that are not finished in school time may be expected to be completed for homework. Ø Assignment work – Throughout the term students may be expected to complete parts of an assignment for homework.
· If a student fails to hand in their completed homework on a Friday they will miss out on Friday afternoon activities. Please send a note in the diary or email if there are any issues regarding homework.
