“Where We Have Been”
Debating has been the focus of work for the past 4 weeks. The boys have viewed a debate, learnt the room layout, the role of each speaker and how to define the topic. The boys have been sorted into debating teams and have been assigned various topics.
Work from their English workbook has been helping, particularly with the persuasive language to use. We have just completed Units 3 and 4 from Sound Waves.
In Maths we have been investigating a typical student. We have discovered that the average height of the class is 1m 55cm and that a typical student would be driven to school by their parents. We have just completed our first tests in Go Check – Whole numbers involving millions and working with tenths, hundredths and thousandths. We are continuing to develop our number fact recollection as a number of boys approach the next stage of our recall test. We are currently working on our mapping skills and trying to explain how we get to school.
In Science we are investigating Fair Tests. Tomato plants have begun sprouting and in about 6 months time we should expect our first harvest. We have undertaken a “Blind Test” which will help the boys in the development of their own “Fair Test.”
Federation Unit is continuing with the boys learning about the reasons for Federation and the reasons against Federation, who the major participants were and how the colonies related to each other before Federation. The Federation Convention was a success as the boys argued their points enthusiastically.
In religion we have been discussing spirituality and leadership. Lent is also a major focus at this time with many boys contributing generously to Project Compassion.
Over the next couple of weeks the boys will begin preparing for their team debates.
“Letters to the Editor” and Persuasive Writing will be our next focus.
