Term 2 – Mr Smith and Mrs Black

Regular Update

We are now half way through the term and nearing the end of the Semester.  The boys will be involved in a few tests in the coming weeks and will have some assessment pieces that they may need to complete at home.

There are links to the assessment items below and it would be of benefit to print these out and keep a copy at home.

The students have enjoyed looking at Antarctica and have approached the unit with great enthusiasm.  The unit has been broken up into a variety of lessons concentrating on the Continent, Nature, Climate, and Australia’s involvement with Exploration, International Treaties and Stewardship.

We are also drawing to the close of a busy Rugby and Soccer season with 3 weeks left.  We have been hit with a number of injuries and illnesses, which has depleted our sides, but with most of those boys on the improve the rest of the season should be exciting.

Reading Groups are still continuing and if you are able to make it on Monday, Wednesday or Friday any assistance you can provide would be appreciated.

Please sign your son’s diary at the end of each week.

Information Technology Project

The students are asked to choose a song that represents something about their personality, goals for the year or hopes for the future.  They are then to search through You Tube and try and find a video clip that supports that vision.

They will present this to the class during Smart Start and prepare and present a short speech outlining the reasons why they chose their song.  The class will then be invited to ask them questions regarding the song and video selection.

We are attempting to teach students about responsible internet use.  They are asked to complete this task with their parents and to not choose any songs or videos with inappropriate material.

Attached is a “You Tube” link that I have shown the students as an example of what they should be trying to find.  Enjoy the task!

Homework

Boys will have homework every night.

Some of these activities include:

Nightly Reading (10-15 minutes),

Night Spelling (going over list words),

Weekly Spelling Activities,

Work that needs to be completed from the day’s lessons, and

Japanese

Year 6 students should be aiming to complete 30-45 minutes of homework each night.

Behaviour Management

There are many behaviour management strategies put in place to assist in classroom proceedings

during the year.

Some of these include: group points, individual good behaviour stamps and also a daily stamp in

their diaries.

Boys who work well during the day receive a smiley face in their diary and a raffle ticket towards a

weekly draw.  If they have not worked within the classroom rules they will receive a warning and a

reminder of the rule.  They still receive a raffle ticket towards the weekly draw and a smiley face.

If they continue to ignore the classroom rules the following consequences will occur:

  1. Name on board – unhappy face – no raffle ticket.
  2. Time Out in classroom – unhappy face – no raffle ticket – note home to parents.
  3. Time Out in buddy classroom – yuk face – no raffle ticket – note home to parents.
  4. Interview with Principal, Classroom Teacher and Parents about son’s behaviour.

Antarctica Assessment

The students will need to complete a Powerpoint Assignment on Antarctica.  They will have 2 classroom lessons per week and they should be able to complete a majority of the assignment during this time.

A copy of the Criteria Sheet and the Checklist is linked here.
