Regular Update

Welcome to Year 6 Blue’s Term 2 update!

As you know we have been very busy this term learning and exploring the amazing continent, Antarctica. Some activities have included:

  • Looking at Antarctic exploration history and creating a timeline of this – displayed along the classroom windows
  • Creating information cards in ICT lessons on various Antarctic topics (e.g. Douglas Mawson, Aurora Lights)
  • Watching an amazing documentary on Antarctic wildlife (the boys were extremely captivated by this)
  • Creating food webs and exploring animals
  • Looking at the Antarctic treaty and land claims, stewardship and impact of humans
  • Reading books – Douglas Mawson expedition, fiction novel on Antarctica and an information book
  • Mapping and co-ordinates of various areas

Other Subject Areas

Maths:

  • Within all Maths strands we have been using interactive tasks on the projector screen to consolidate the boy’s knowledge, stimulate their interest and to cater for the wide range of learners (visual aide).
  • Identifying 2D shapes - students were required (in groups) to explore the school grounds and find identify as many 2D shapes as they could. They took photos of these and presented them to using PowerPoint to the class. This activity was hands on and really stimulated the interest of the boys and seeing these shapes around the school and then on the PowerPoint assisted them to be able to identify and name these shapes successfully.
  • Naming angles – In groups students were given an angle they had to represent and within the given timeframe they had to work together to show this angle using their bodies – see pictures below!
  • Chance and Data – Graphed and labelled various groups of data. I am impressed with how well the boys can now present statistical information
  • Introducing the Protractor – measuring and labelling angles.
  • Place value – using place value charts and counters
  • Basic facts – using dice, bingo cards, maths grids to practice addition, subtraction and times table to increase speed and accuracy

English:

·            Orals – The imagination and creative flair that students went to for their orals this term was nothing short of      fantastic. The PowerPoints, visual aides (i.e. costumes, ingredients etc) and ready made food samples really      gained and maintained everyone’s attention and interest.

·            Persusasive Writing – Looking at the structure of a persuasive text and opinions on certain issues. Students were given various statements and had to stand on a continuum depending on how strongly they agreed or   disagreed with certain issues which sparked great debate and deep thinking. The boys took this very seriously and had great responses to their opinions.

·            Writing Piece – Persuasive Letter to Kevin Rudd about an issue that concerns them (Assessment Item)

·            Sounds Waves – weekly sound identified, chants and actions sung every week with the assistance of our CD      sing-along

·            Reading Groups (comprehension, spelling activities, literature circles)

Religion:

  • Baptism and Confirmation – poster activities to identify actions, words and symbols used in both these sacraments.
  • Parts of the mass – mix and match activities which was consolidated with our own Year 6 Mass

Last Day of Term

You may be aware we have a behaviour management system in our class whereby students earn stamps when they demonstrate good behaviour. If each boy is lucky enough to receive 40 stamps by the end of term (next Friday) they will:

*Receive a certificate for their amazing achievement (the first 10 boys to receive 40 stamps)

*Be allowed bring ‘electronics’ to school. This includes: Ipods, Playstation, Nintendo DS, laptops, remote controlled cars etc.

*Be able to watch a video, ‘Happy Feet’ to follow our Antarctic theme.

*Be allowed to indulge in fairy floss (I have a machine that I will be bringing in).

A note will be sent home shortly for you to allocate times for Parent-Teacher-Interviews. I am happy to start holding interviews next week after school as well.
